Physical activity has been shown to have a positive effect on many long term health conditions including heart disease, diabetes and many more.
It can also reduce the risk of healthy people developing these conditions. Being active regularly is also important in helping to maintain a healthy weight. It has also been well documented that many medical and health issues can be greatly improved by weight loss.
Losing weight can often be made harder by health issues which impact on our activity levels.
Both fitness and nutrition work hand in hand to deliver the best results for you.
Take for instance, people who have had obesity-related type 2 diabetes for years who have been cured, at least temporarily, by keeping to an extreme, low-calorie, diet for two months. The discovery, reported by scientists at Newcastle University, overturns previous assumptions about type 2 diabetes, which was thought to be a lifelong illness.
In the UK about two and a half million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, the large majority with type 2, and numbers are rising across much of the world. The condition has to be controlled with drugs and eventually insulin injections. It can cause blindness and end in foot amputation, as well as shortening life.
The results of the Newcastle investigation, though the study was small, demonstrated that full recovery was possible, not through drugs but through diet. Eleven people with diabetes took part in the study, they had to slash their food intake to just 600 calories a day for two months. But three months later seven of the 11 were free of diabetes.
This is the impact nutrition can have on your health and wellbeing and ultimately your quality of life.
Another example would look at the person awaiting hip replacement surgery. Naturally they will be limited by the form of exercise they can participate in due to their arthritis and if asked to lose weight by health professionals, this can often prove difficult for them.
Depending on the level of pain they are encountering on a daily basis, they may not have any motivation to be physically active. However, much can be done to improve their health.
Infiniti can offer nutritional advice to encourage weight loss and also provide a program of Pilates exercises which can help improve core stability.
The trainer will also help the client maintain or possibly even improve joint flexibility, which will hugely improve the recovery process after surgery. This is just one example of how the inclusion of a wellbeing program can improve lifestyle.
